What Have You Done for Your Brain Lately?

Several months ago at the end of an intense session with Jim, a patient I had been seeing for a few months in my office, he asked me for ideas on how to regain his energy, creativity and motivation.

I explained to him that the brain, like other muscles in our body, needs to be maintained in optimal working condition by exercising it properly. In other words, the brain needs its own strengthening exercises.

I recalled a book I’d read a few years ago that discussed the brain’s needs for exercise called “Neurobic” – a word combining neurons and aerobics. The book along with other research on brain plasticity and strengthening different pathways put me on the course of exploring Neurofeedback therapy.

Your Brain Is Anything But Ordinary

It’s important to keep in mind that the brain “does not like routine.” Routine is not challenging the brain and tends to weaken its ability to create new pathways which are critical for creativity. Also, routine weakens existing pathways and the ability to form new connection. Just as repeating the same easy exercises at the gym does not strengthen muscles, even if it gives the impression of a good workout. So our goal is to challenge the brain and break routines, routinely.

Breaking Normal Habits

I directed Jim to perform a series of exercises that included going to the bathroom, brushing his teeth and taking a shower all with his eyes closed. He was also asked to use his non-dominant hand to do simple activities and to take different routes to work every day. These activities forced his brain to use information from different senses and form new connections in the brain. The most significant impact was when he started a protocol of NeuroFeedback.

Several weeks later it all started to pay off. His mind was sharper, his energy level was greater and he began to take pleasure in his ability to do things he had not done before.

A Happy Patient Makes Me A Happy Psychologist

It’s hard to describe the sheer satisfaction I got from seeing this patient improve so dramatically, but it also renewed my faith in the power of the mind and our ability to strengthen our brain to its optimal functioning with therapy and NeuroFeedback.
